This makes absolutely no sense... but whatevers..
no no no no no no NO! WTF!
now I hate the clowney deal this is a mistake the guy is a baller!
explain this move FO. do a presser goddamnit!

It makes a ton of cents. I won’t lose any sleep over it. This defense was mediocre last year. And Richardson was part of why that was. Out with the old in with the new
I loved the guy but $12M is a good chunk.
you are some of the same guys that cheered when peppers got traded. YAY he sux! you said..
but you dont know what you have until its gone.our S position has been a D weakness since he left.
I think its a mistake

Not happy.
I think its a move that has the markings of a organizations that knows how to be proactive for the future. All moves are a gamble but this one feels like an analytical approach.
lets see how it plays out.
lets see how it plays out.
So PFF wise,
Malik Jackson (64.7) replaces Sheldon Richardson (71.1)
And $ wise,
Going from Richardson (11M) to Jackson (3.75M) saves 7.25M

I get the move. And these types of moves are the ones we're going to have to get used to.
I liked Richardson too, because he played every game, but he's 30, he got 4.5 sacks, and 5 TFL, 10 QB hits.
Does nobody think that is replaceable, for less?

I love the guy too... I'm betting if no one else comes along and he doesnt get what hes fightin for.. We may get him back on the cheap... And Id be okay with that .. A restructured deal...
As I posted elsewhere, Richardson signed with the Vikings for $3.6 million. We would have been on the hook for almost $14 million had we retained him...which the market showed would have been a massive over paying. Great job by Berry of cap management...especially with Ward, Baker and Chubb needing new contracts soon. Every dollar (or every million in this case) matters.
ouch.

Good luck Sheldon. Would have been nice to have had young Sheldon so we could keep him around for a few years, he could hustle and work.
Good player on the downside of his career. The Patriot model: better to get rid of a player a year too early than a year too late. Maybe hard to embrace emotionally as a fan, but it's worked well for the organization as a business model.
Bad move which doesn’t make sense. The only example of the team getting worse this off-season.
I was sad to see Sheldon go. He was a reliable veteran presence on a defense that had few. But seeing that he signed for only 1yr/3.6 million to essentially be a backup for the Vikings, makes me think that Andrew Berry evaluated the market properly. 14 million a year was simply too much to pay for Sheldon at this point in his career, and as we discuss often, we will probably need that 14 rolled over for some future extensions.
His pride strictly got in the way…..not going to lose any sleep on this.
In April I thought we would miss him this season, then we picked up Tommy T and Wilson. Our DL will be an absolute strength this season.
I called his release early this offseason. I wanted a restructure but knew his pride would be an issue.
I hated to see Sheldon go, but the contract was just insane.
“Bad move” is probably strong.
“Understandable move but I wish Sheldon would’ve restructured” is closer to how I feel.

enjoyed his effort and presence but not at $12 million.
Lol come on man, he was solid but also saw him and Ogunjobi get pushed around easily at times! Only had 4.5 sacks not like he had 12 sacks or played the run like Suh!
I have a difficult time bemoaning a player who turns down money in excess of $3.6 million. Let him play in Minny. Soon he will be working on a beer truck in snow up to his thigh pads.
It's all business. Like the Vikings better? Enjoy Sheldon. We hardly knew ye.
For better or worse it's a whole new set of faces.
Sheldon Richardsons' play on the field was NOT slacking.

How fricken stupid...sign "Clown"ey and release Richardson....GMAFB
Absolutely dumb.
This is a surprise. I knew he would gone after this year but I did not see this coming.
this sucks, i liked richardson a lot
at this point i trust what AB and the front office are doing, so hopefully itll make sense.
Richardson wont last on the market, either

I'm shocked. But will wait till the end of the off season to judge.
I thought Richardson has been one of the most reliable and consistent performers since he arrived.

Although this is a bitter pill to swallow. I have trust in Berry.
He is a strategic planner.

I loved Sheldon but this is a cruel bottom line business.
He was not worth 12 million. Period.
He was not worth 12 million. Period.
Doh! He was overpaid but he was a pretty good player that played every game. This being his last year it bothers me to see a move like this. Hope they have a reason other than saving money.
This is a TERRIBLE idea.
I sincerely hope Berry shares his reasoning ASAP.
This is a horrendous move. first bad one by berry. He will probably regret it. Releasing him does not make us a better team. Especially since there is no one available as good as him.
Richardson wasn't in any long term plan. It's not as foolish as you think.
Mixed emotions... I hate losing Richardson... but he's not worth $12m.... i'd probably rather have Richardson than Clowny.... but if we offered to restructure and he turned us down I understand the cut...
Not Happy with this HOWEVER!! We could not keep him at his current salary
Richardson has been productive, reliable and a fantastic leader. He's a very good player.
As far as Richardson. I loved the guy and thought he was one of three on Defense that actually earned their keep.
That being said we gonna have to make some cap space. It has been rumored he had the cap hit that was gonna make room.
As good as he was he wasnt a 12m defensive tackle. Sorry he just wasn't.

Don't like this move at all. I know Richardson wasn't worth what he was being paid but why create another hole and he was still playing pretty good.
I understand the business end and cap slack it gives us. But he gave us some good value.
I'd like to see us take Sheldon back. Good player, good teammate and a leader. How about 7-8 million with incentives?
Isn't the ultimate goal of all this to win a Super Bowl? So why cut a guy and create another hole when our cap situation is fine?
Cutting Sheldon Richardson sends the wrong message from the team in total.
I mean on all levels.
Because everything went right with the Sheldon Richardson signing.

I guess for me, I think it was just the money angle. I can't believe they were unhappy with his performance. He was pretty solid..
Sheldon is history. Get over it.
We're a better team with Richardson than without
I don't fault Richardson in seeking the best deal for him and I don't blame the Browns for allocating cap dollars in the manner which in their opinion best helps the Browns.
Oh well time to move on.
I liked Sheldon and I wish him well.
I liked Sheldon and I wish him well.
Two predictions on Sheldon leaving:
The FO really likes Elliott and we will see why;
After he retires, Sheldon will say that his biggest regret was not re-signing with the Browns

Stupid pride kept him from making more.
You know, we've had discussions about whether you would work somewhere making less money where you feel happy or more money at a place you aren't happy. Many posters said if they could still make a decent living they would like to work somewhere they would be more happy because work takes up a large portion of your life.
Which sounds like a wonderful way of thinking. I guess, of course, that's until somebody else does it.

I don't know, I understand what you are saying, but people do come to a point where money isn't a driving factor.
